Chainsself
Hello, I am Oleg, and I am the creator behind the metallic creatures you'll see on this site. I'd like to share my story with you.
I was born in Moscow, to parents who are of Ukrainian descent. Much of my childhood was spent in Ukraine, living with my grandparents. My grandmother, a teacher of biology and chemistry, perhaps sparked my early interest in the natural world. I have fond memories of creating herbaria together and studying insects from books. I was always drawn to observation of living beings. I discovered the Animal Planet channel and was completely captivated, especially by series like Meerkat Manor. In school, I excelled in biology, chemistry, and mathematics. I enjoyed the challenges of geometry and represented my school in a number of academic competitions. After graduating, I decided to study medicine in Moscow and was accepted into the medical faculty of Moscow State University. After two years, I realized medicine wasn't my calling, so I switched my focus to clinical psychology, remaining within the same university. My university education lasted seven and a half years.
During the latter years of my studies, as the Covid pandemic took hold, I began working at an advertising agency. Simultaneously, I started exploring the craft of chain jewelry. My first piece was an outfit created for a party, and the positive reception led me to delve deeper into the medium. I invested earnings from advertising into this new venture. I began to exhibit at local markets and collaborate with photographers. My Instagram account, if you scroll back to the start, holds many early examples of this. In August, I took a trip to Georgia as a respite. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, mobilization was announced in Russia. I made the difficult choice to remain in Georgia. This is where my path as an artist truly began. Emigration is always a complex experience, but to be in a new country, starting from the ground up, with limited financial resources (having invested my savings back home) was particularly challenging. I then made the decision to shift my social media to English, which also presented a learning curve for me. I engaged a language tutor, as my English skills were basic at best. I found sources for materials and started designing new pieces. Working with my hands was a powerful way to manage stress. The environment in Georgia was incredibly inspirational – surrounded by mountains, forests, and lakes. My designs rapidly progressed, moving to more complex chain work and integrating crystals. I was able to exhibit in markets and was invited to participate in a local fashion show.
I met Dasha at one of these markets, who became a friend and mentor, teaching me the art of soldering. This led me to working with tin, which felt like a significant shift in my work. While chain-based clothing is striking, it is not particularly efficient for a sustainable business strategy. I spent months refining my technique. At the same time, I began to create engaging reels which gained me new followers. Ultimately, I felt limited by tin and decided to start learning the craft of working with silver. This was a new challenge entirely, requiring further learning, I slowly became a jeweler.
I am grateful to my friends and family for their support. I now enjoy working with silver, brass, and sometimes tin. These materials allow me to express my imagination and share my fascination with the world around me. My artistic journey is just beginning, and I look forward to sharing it with you on my Instagram. Thank you for your time in reading my story.
